She said that this two-stage model also appeared in humans. In the short term, people taking fluoxetine are less likely to break bones, but when they take the drug for a year or more, the risk of bone failure and fracture increases.
“This work provides a mechanism for how a commonly used SSRI affects bones,†said René Rizzoli from the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. So far, it is difficult to figure out whether depression itself causes fractures through lifestyle changes such as more frequent smoking and eating and eating disorders.
Other SSRI drugs may not have the same effect. The Ducy team found that citalopram did not have any positive or negative effects on the bones.
