On June 21, 2016, Weill Cornell Medical School launched a new international antibiotic resistance study called “Global City Sampling Dayâ€. The event spans six continents, 32 countries and 54 cities. Researchers and volunteers will collect 12,000 DNA, RNA and microbial samples from public places where subways, buses, planes and other crowds are concentrated.
Construction of genetic and epigenetic maps of urban microbiome
After collecting samples from the transportation hub, the researchers sequenced and analyzed the samples and used the data to construct a genetic and epigenetic map detailing each microbiome. These data will help scientists from the Grand Challenges Explorations MetaSub Global Alliance program to better understand antibiotic resistance in urban centers while looking for microbiologically synthesized, new, naturally occurring drugs (known as For biosynthetic gene clusters). The results of the study will be shared with local public health officials and city planners to help them use the data to make cities safer and more resilient.
Mr. Ben Kallos and Associate Professor of Physiology, Biophysics and Computational Genomics at Weill Cornell Medical School, Dr. Christopher Mason, Principal Investigator of the project, initiated a sample collection in New York. Mr. Kallos said: “Global City Sampling Day†We have an opportunity to learn that there are more than 600 different microbes and New Yorkers taking the subway every day. We are very grateful to Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Mason and hundreds of volunteers who are willing to help us understand the health of the city." Volunteers wiped the subway station in the Upper East Side to collect samples.
Dr. Mason said: "Whenever I look around a room or a subway station, I always think: What is there? Through this work, we can answer this question. Not only New York, we can even study the world. All places. This is a long-term project that understands the world in which we live from a genetic level."
