National University of Singapore develops portable robotic gloves to help patients recover

Release date: 2016-01-15

A research team from the National University of Singapore has developed a lightweight and intelligent robotic glove that helps patients who have lost their hand function due to injury or nerve damage. This robotic glove replaces conventional rigid electromechanical components with soft fabrics and embedded drives (motors) that can conform to natural hand movements, are lightweight, portable, and intuitive enough that patients can perform their own rehabilitation exercises at home.

Rehabilitation gloves are now commonly used to help patients recover their hand functions. They have low-cost and commercial versions, but researchers at the National University of Singapore believe that the robotic glove called EsoGlove allows patients to guide themselves to rehabilitation instead of Passively accepted by the therapist.

EsoGlove has two types of table and belt. The glove part is connected to a pump valve control system. The glove is softly actuated by modifying the pressure range along each finger. Because the actuator is soft and has no rigidity, it can assist finger movement. An adjustable Velcro strap ensures that the glove is suitable for most patients.

Robotic gloves predict the patient's intended operation by reading the electrical activity of the patient's hand muscles and then assisting them in completing the task. In theory, EsoGlove can manipulate objects of various shapes and sizes, but it also needs to accumulate clinical trial data.
