RF module accelerates the pace of market for implantable medical devices

The ZL70323 is the smallest radio module ever built by Microsemi for use in medical device optimization such as pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators and neurostimulators.

Its size is 5.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 mm and is based on the company's support for very high data rate RF links, low power ZL70103 radio transceiver chips for medical implant communication applications.

It implements all of the RF-related functions required to deploy a node implanted in a Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) RF Telemetry System. The integrated antenna tuning circuit allows for the use of modules with a range of implantable antennas (nominal antenna impedance of 100 + J150).

The module provides the ZL70103-based MICS band RF transceiver integrated matching network, and the SAW filter suppresses unwanted blockers and antenna tuning. It also features a 2.45GHz wake-up receiver matching network and an integrated 24MHz reference frequency crystal with decoupling capacitors and series termination resistors.

According to the company, patient health and device performance data can be transmitted quickly with implanted devices that hardly affect battery life. The device operates in the 402 to 405 MHz MICS band. Support for multiple low-power wake-up options, including the 2.45GHz ULP Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band wake-up reception option. The ZL70103 consumes less than 6 mA when transmitting or receiving, while consuming only 290 nA in periodic sleep/sniff mode (1 second sniff interval).

The module is available now, and the company also offers an application development kit to qualified customers.
