Mayo researchers take another step in liver cancer DNA testing

Release date: 2018-06-06

On June 6, according to medicalxpress, a foreign medical academic website, researchers from the Mayo Clinic and Exact Sciences Corporation completed a Phase II study that included a set of DNA markers and alpha fetuses. Proteins were compared as a method for detecting liver cancer. The researchers presented their findings and data today at the 2018 Digestive Diseases Week in Washington, DC.

"We currently use ultrasound and a blood protein marker called alpha-fetoprotein to detect liver cancer," said mesophysiologist John Kisiel of the Mayo Clinic. "Unfortunately, these tests are not very sensitive to curable liver cancer, and most patients who require this test can't easily get this test, or they can't often take it to make it effective."

Dr. Kisiel and his colleagues developed a simple blood test using abnormal DNA markers known to be present in liver cancer tissues. They were able to confirm the presence of abnormal DNA markers in blood samples from most patients with primary liver cancer. At the same time, these markers were not present in healthy people and cirrhotic patients, but there was no evidence of tumors during clinical follow-up.

Dr. Kisiel said: "What we are most excited about is that our DNA markers can detect more than 90% of patients with curable tumors." "This is the main reason we think DNA testing is different from existing tests." "The next step will be Blood tests for these markers are validated in more patient cohorts," Dr. Kisiel said.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the number of new cases of liver cancer and cholangiocarcinoma in the United States is nearly 9 per 100,000. Primary liver cancer is the leading cause of pain and death in patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis B. Worldwide, liver cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death.
