A new method for imaging evaluation of curative effect of tumor invented by China University of Science and Technology

Release date: 2016-04-06

Recently, Prof. Liang Gaolin from the School of Chemistry and Materials Science of the University of Science and Technology of China cooperated with the research team of Zhongkai, a strong magnetic field science center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to invent a magnetic resonance nano-contrast agent that can “smart” self-aggregation in chemotherapy tumors. Its excellent tumor imaging effect was verified in tumor-bearing mice. The research results were published online on March 31 in the internationally renowned academic journal Nano Express.

The caspase family plays an important role in mediating apoptosis. The detection of caspase can monitor the early apoptosis of tumor cells and evaluate the efficacy of tumor chemotherapy. Treatment provides a reference. MRI is a non-radiative, non-invasive imaging technique with many imaging parameters, fast scanning speed and high tissue resolution. It is a common imaging method. Magnetic nanoparticles have been widely used in bioimaging. Large magnetic nanoparticles are superior to magnetic resonance imaging nanoparticles currently used in magnetic resonance imaging, but the former is quickly cleared in the blood, leading to tissue The magnetic resonance signal is lowered.

In order to solve this problem, Professor Liang Gaolin's research group designed a "smart" small molecule - triiron tetroxide composite nanoparticle, which is controlled by caspase in apoptotic tumor cells. The self-aggregation of large-sized magnetic nanoparticles can significantly enhance the transverse magnetic resonance imaging signals of tumors. They collaborated with Zhong Kai's research group to perform magnetic resonance imaging on mouse tumors in the magnetic field strength of 9.4 Tesla in the Strong Magnetic Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The results showed that compared with the control group of ferroferric oxide magnetic nanoparticles, the "smart" The laterally weighted magnetic resonance imaging signals of ferroferric oxide magnetic nanoparticles were significantly enhanced and were not toxic to mice.

Experts say that this new type of ferroferric oxide nano-contrast agent can more easily, accurately and sensitively determine the activity of caspase in vitro and in vivo, thus providing a new idea for the evaluation of tumor chemotherapy efficacy. Reviewers highly valued this novel strategy, saying that "this new method provides a valuable biomarker for tumor imaging and detection of the efficacy of anticancer treatments."
