The French Open! British prosecutors use 3D printed skull models for the first time in court

Release date: 2016-05-04

On April 28, 2016, the British prosecutor first used a 3D printed skull replica in court to show the fatal injury suffered by a six-year-old girl's head. This is the first time in the history of British justice that 3D printing will be performed. The skull replica is used as evidence in court.

The prosecution alleged that on October 28, 2013, 6-year-old Ellie Butler was beaten to death by her full-time father, 36-year-old Ben Butler, who was taking care of Ellie at Sutton's home. The prosecution presented two 3D printed skull models to the jury during the trial.

It is understood that the technology was initially used to prove whether Ellie's injuries were caused by an accident.

Prosecutor Ed Brown QC explained that they only transferred the electronic records of CT scans to a 3D object, adding: "This (two 3D printed models) is just to illustrate and explain the evidence, it is not evidence in itself. ."

But Butler's defense lawyer argued with the jury that the accuracy of this 3D printed copy was not reliable. The lawyer said: "In our opinion, they are not exactly the same... I think someone might have dealt with them. They are just somebody trying their best to rebuild what he saw in the scan, but It does not fully represent the scan results. We cannot rely too much on its absolute accuracy."

Nat Cary, a forensic pathologist who advised, said: "These 3D printed skulls are printed using data collected by CT scanners and digitized X-ray data."

In the previous day's trial, the jury saw a chilling video in which Butler cursed the scarred little girl. But Butler denied allegations of murder and child abuse in court.

Ellie's mother, 36-year-old Jennie Gray, was also accused of child abuse because she did not have any treatment for Ellie's injured shoulder within a few weeks, indirectly causing Ellie's death.

During the court hearing last week, the prosecution read a prayer and letter from Gray about her hateful husband. Gray admitted in court that it impeded justice, but denied child abuse.

The case is continuing to be heard.
