Researchers have discovered four biomarkers that can help identify high-risk groups that may die from any disease in the next five years.

Researchers from Finland and Estonia have discovered new biomarkers that indicate the risk of death from disease in the near future.

To investigate the five-year risk of death in those blood molecules, the researchers screened more than one hundred different biomolecules from blood samples from more than 17,000 healthy people. Then, the volunteers who underwent the study were followed up for several years.

In an article published in the PLOS Medical Journal, the researchers described four biomarkers that identified death. These biomarkers are the size of albumin, alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, citrate and very low density lipoprotein particles. Among them, albumin was previously proposed to be associated with the risk of death. These molecules are themselves in the blood of everyone, but their quantity is the key. New biomarkers help detect a higher risk of death during a five-year period. These measurements are different from known risk factors such as age, smoking, alcohol, obesity, blood pressure and cholesterol. When the healthy person was examined, the test results did not change.

“It's especially interesting that these biomarkers reflect the risk of dying from very different types of diseases, such as heart disease or cancer. They seem to be signs of overall weakness in the body. Next, our goal is to study these biomarkers. There is some kind of connection between them," said Dr. Johannes Kettunen of Helsinki University. "We believe that these measures can be used in the future to determine who looks healthy, but there are serious unexplained diseases that lead them to treatment. However, more research is needed before clinical trials."

The discovery of these new biomarkers may be attributed to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This technology developed in Finland allows a large number of blood samples to be screened cost-effectively.
