There has always been a contradiction between medical resources and growing medical needs. In some poor areas, due to the lack of quality medical services, major diseases and cancers cannot be diagnosed in time, often leading to death due to lack of appropriate treatment.
However, with the deep learning algorithm of artificial intelligence, such a situation will be improved in the future. In China, there is a company called Imagination, which is using machine learning and computer vision to help doctors diagnose lung cancer.
"We don't have enough qualified doctors, so a doctor must serve many patients every day. For patients, there are individual differences in the quality of care they receive," said Chen Kuan, CEO of Technology.
This situation is particularly serious in radiology. According to public information, there are currently more than 80,000 radiologists in China, which diagnoses 1.44 billion images per year. The number of readings increases by about 30% per year, while radiologists only increase by 4%. Chen Kuan’s aunt is one of the patients affected by this. In Mianyang, Sichuan, she failed to diagnose lung cancer in time and failed to receive appropriate and timely treatment.
Before the establishment of the technology, Chen Kuan was a Ph.D. in Economics and Political Science at the University of Chicago. During his time in the United States, Chen Kuan and his friends were exposed to artificial intelligence, especially deep learning. They won the championship in the 2012 Visual Identity Competition (ImageNetILSVRC).
