MIT New Technology: This pill should also be connected to "WiFi"

Electronic devices in the gastrointestinal tract are expected to revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of the gastrointestinal tract. The traditional power source is usually a battery, which is limited by small size and safety. If the traditional battery is powered, the working time of the gastrointestinal device will be very limited.

Many mobile phone providers have developed wireless charging methods for mobile phones. Can this wireless power supply be used to charge gastrointestinal devices? This type of charging, known as near-field coupling, is already a very mature power delivery technique that has been used in cochlear implants or neural probes in medical devices . But for gastrointestinal devices, they are not only very small, but also swallowed by the body and have a very significant distance from the body surface, which makes the near field coupling technology unreachable for gastrointestinal electronic devices.

Scientists at MIT have developed a technique called intermediate field coupling that replaces near-field coupling to wirelessly deliver gastrointestinal capsules deep into the body of electronic devices. The intermediate field coupling operates at higher frequencies and the effective transmission rate is 2-3 times higher.

Based on this technology, MIT scientists have studied an electronic capsule model that can receive radio signals, which can work within the safe power range required by the clinic, and the energy transmission does not cause damage to biological tissues. The study was published in the journal Scientfic Reports.

To test whether this intermediate field coupling technique can deliver power from the outside to the gastrointestinal tract, the research team designed an antenna that can work effectively within these tissues, then placed one antenna in vitro and another in the esophagus and stomach of the pig model. And in the colon. They can transmit power levels of 37.5 uW, 123 uW, and 173 uW, all of which are sufficient to power a range of medical devices in an in vitro wireless location.
