Grass-raising sheep, as the name implies, is to cultivate high-quality forage grass and cultivate high-quality mutton sheep. The main points of this project are mainly on the selection of pasture, planting and grazing arrangements, selection of mutton sheep species, and sheep breeding techniques. Currently, there are mature technologies and they have been popularized in some counties in the central and western regions of China.
The sheep is also a herbivore with ruminating function. It has a developed complex stomach and has a strong ability to digest and use crude fiber. In sheep feed, 55-95% of non-structural carbohydrates, 70-95 % of crude fiber is digested in the rumen. Therefore, grasses and sheep breeding should be dominated by grasses, and reasonably matched with legumes. The preferred species of legume forage grasses is alfalfa, which can also be used for sandgrass. Grazing grasses focus on the selection of forage sorghum, sudan grass and its hybrids, alfalfa and other varieties. In terms of species collocation, the ratio of legumes to grasses is 1:2. Each sheep needs to consume 1,400 kilograms of green fodder each year, 460 kilograms of legume grass and 940 kilograms of grasses. Under normal production conditions, each sheep needs about 0.15 mu of legume forage and about 0.16 mu of grass forage.
