Snacks are eaten by almost every child. Recently, a survey has given parents a wake-up call. A survey on the intake of food additives by children in 9 cities in China issued by the non-profit organization "iearth-love the earth" showed that there are nine kinds of snacks eaten by children with the most additives. The survey was conducted in nine primary and secondary schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'an. A total of nearly 20,000 children participated in the survey.
The report pointed out that 1/10 of children eat additive-containing snacks more than 3 times a day, and 6% of children drink more than 3 bottles a day (excluding mineral water and homemade tea). In summer, the number of children who eat ice cream every day is as high as 26%.
The survey also sampled the list of 489 kinds of foods in 33 categories and the food additives contained therein. According to a food safety project consultant from iearth, a professor of the Department of Food Science and Engineering at the former Nanchang University, foods such as instant noodles, milk beverages, potato chips, ice cream, and biscuits contain the most additives.
1, instant noodles
A pack of instant noodles can have up to 25 kinds of food additives, common are sodium glutamate, caramel, citric acid, tert-butyl hydroquinone and so on. Long-term consumption of products containing citric acid by children may lead to hypocalcemia.
2, ham
The additives contained include sodium nitrite, potassium sorbate, and the like. Sodium nitrite may produce carcinogenic nitrosamines in vivo.
3, candied fruit
The additives contained are citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and the like. Sodium benzoate will destroy vitamin B1 and affect children's calcium absorption.
4, ice cream
Artificial flavors, thickeners, synthetic pigments and other additives are most commonly used. And some of the artificial colors, foreign regulations can not be used for food.
5, jelly
Potassium sorbate, citric acid and carrageenan additives are most commonly used. Excessive intake of potassium sorbate can cause allergic reactions and affect your child's calcium absorption.
6, biscuits
Included additives include sodium metabisulfite, citric acid, sorbitol. A large amount of sodium metabisulfite damages cells and is biologically toxic.
7, milk tea
The additives contained include potassium sorbate, sodium hexametaphosphate and the like. Excessive amounts of the latter cause disorders of calcium metabolism.
8, chewing gum
May contain aspartame, sorbitol, citric acid and other additives. Too much sorbitol can cause diarrhea.
9, potato chips
Possible additives include sodium glutamate, disodium 5'-guanosine, and the like. Both of the above are prohibited for use in baby foods.
In addition, the survey also found that sweeteners such as aspartame or acesulfame were used in foods that children often ingested. The two additives have also been reported to be associated with a variety of adverse reactions. Experts remind parents of children with allergies, asthma, and ADHD that they should pay special attention to the foods children often eat because certain food additives may aggravate these symptoms.
The Associate Professor of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention told the Life Times that not all snacks are good for children. Snacks can be divided into grades. For example, snacks that can be eaten regularly include: whole wheat biscuits, nutritious cereals, vegetables, fruits, dried fruit, cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, homemade bread, etc.; can be eaten 2-3 times per week: cookies, ice cream, hawthorn Slices, Egg Rolls, Puddings, Animal Biscuits, Oatmeal Rolls, Nori, Homemade Juice, etc.; only occasional: Candy, Chocolate, Chips, French Fries, Corn Chips, Marshmallows, Scones, Preserves, Shrimp Strips , carbonated drinks, etc. Instant noodles, ham, jelly, instant milk tea, etc. are best not to eat.
