Related research papers were published in the online edition of the new issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers at Harvard University and other institutions analyzed data from more than 500,000 cases of emergency treatment of acute myocardial infarction in Florida from 1991 to 2010. They found that the gender match between the patient and the treating doctor "is related to life and death": if a female patient is first aided by a female doctor, her survival rate is significantly higher than the average.
Why do female patients have a better chance of survival by female doctors? The researchers believe that this may be because the symptoms of female patients with acute myocardial infarction are not the same as those of male patients, and female patients are relatively more prone to delays in rescue. Male doctors seem to be more difficult to treat women with myocardial infarction. But researchers say that in the United States, the proportion of male doctors in hospital emergency systems is significantly higher than that of female doctors. Therefore, in the long run, the simplest and most effective measure is to increase the proportion of female doctors in the first aid system.
