Children sinusitis can cause cerebral venous sinus thrombosis

Gao Tianqin, chief pediatrician of Beijing Tiantan Hospital, found that sinusitis infection may be the main cause of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in children. Neuroimaging can provide a basis for the diagnosis of the disease. Prompt and correct treatment can significantly improve the prognosis.

Researchers studied children with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis clinically treated in the past two years and found that children often presented with symptoms of headache and intracranial hypertension. They were often associated with vomiting, seizures, disturbance of consciousness, and neurological deficits. In this group of 12 children, the ratio of male to female was 2:1; there were 4 cases without specific cause, and 8 cases were due to infectious factors. Among them, 11 cases had abnormal blood tests and 7 cases had sinusitis. Transcranial brain magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance venography showed that the most common sinus injuries in children were sigmoid sinus and transverse sinus, and the main causes of sinusitis were sinusitis.

In response to the different conditions of the 12 patients, symptomatic support, Gao Baoqin, etc. were treated with low molecular weight heparin injection and oral warfarin anticoagulant or thrombolytic therapy, and 8 patients were cured and discharged.

According to Gao Baoqin, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a neurological emergency. Reports of childhood morbidity are rare, and are significantly different from adult non-infectious diseases. Because the symptoms are not typical at the time of onset, the signs are lacking in specificity, and clinically it is easy to cause misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis.

To this end, Gao Baoqin suggested that cerebral venous system imaging should be performed on children with increased primary intracranial pressure and atypical headache to exclude cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
