The project “Nano-weathered Coal Multifunctional Fertilizer for Remediation of Desertification Land†presided over by Zhang Fudao, a researcher at the Institute of Soil and Fertilizers, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, passed the appraisal. The national “10th Five-year Plan†and “863†nano-biotechnology research projects passed the appraisal of this country, indicating that China has used biotechnology to produce fertilizer to a new level. According to reports, the project adopts liquid chemical methods, micro-emulsification, high-shearing, and heterogenous mixing technologies pioneered at home and abroad to process weathered coal and waste plastics into nano-sized humic acid mixed polymers and nano-plastic micelles. The solution, after a few processes, produces a sand-fixing and water-retaining agent, and is mixed with a certain proportion of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to form a multifunctional fertilizer. The field bioremediation comparative test conducted on fully desertified land in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia, demonstrated that the fertilizer produced by this technology can increase the yield of cultivated pasture by more than 3 times, and the yield of large-scale demonstration pasture increased by more than 1 time. There is also a significant increase in the rate of emergence of crops. The expert appraisal believes that this technology is an original technology in the same type of research and it is of great significance both for the biological remediation of desertified land and for the utilization of waste resources.
