Russian experts have questioned a method developed by Tanford University that uses ultrasound to deliver drugs to the brain to treat tumors. The school says its accuracy can reach half a millimeter and is ready for human testing.
Victor Tymoshenko, a professor at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering Physics at the Moscow State Institute of Engineering Physics at the Russian National University of Nuclear Research, said: "The Stanford team studied the effects of focused pulsed ultrasound on the designated brain regions of experimental animals (ie rats). Submicron biopolymer capsules (400 nm) soaked with the latest hypnotics can be applied in advance. Although the inventors are very optimistic and are ready to study the potential of this technology for patients, it cannot be said that the targeted delivery of drugs to the brain has been resolved. All the questions."
It also stated that the drug container itself does not overcome the blood-brain barrier. Ultrasound may indeed lead to a “cracking†of the blood-brain barrier, but this study may combine several methods. Animals are just a model of brain-inhibiting drugs, and it is almost impossible to study the rapid transformation of treatment into human brain tumors.
The amount of ultrasound used in the university is several tens of times lower than the amount of ultrasound used in disrupting (ablation) medical tissue. This kind of ultrasound has almost no therapeutic effect, and even causes local heating and brain tissue damage on the cell level, which is equivalent to hammer hitting the head.
Medical technology is the need to constantly try, after all, the brain of human brain and animal is still different, the brain is the most vulnerable place of the human body , human body testing needs to be cautious.
